Extraordinary Heroes

"K2T Wisata"

On Friday, November 12th, the exhibit “Extraordinary Heroes” opened its doors to tourism in London, featuring a series of elements and war trophies.
England had, during a long time, an enormous international power due to its dominance of the oceans. Those taking a trip to London these days will be able to appreciate a collection of 164 prizes that go from the Crimea war to the Falklands / Islas Malvinas. With them, 48 Victoria Crosses and 31 George Crosses, which belong to the Imperial War Museum of London’s permanent collection, will also be exhibited.
The Victoria Cross, also known as VC, is the greatest military consecration, which is given to courage “in face of the enemy” to members of the Commonwealth. In the past, it was also given to those who belonged to the former British Empire.
Its civil counterpart is the George Cross, which is also called GC, the greatest prize to the courage of civilians, or of military personnel but in actions that do not take place in face of the enemy or that are not framed among normal military honors. Nevertheless, the VC has a greatest honorary power. The collection of Victoria Crosses exhibited on this occasion on the Lord Ascroft Gallery of the Imperial War Museum of the city of London is one of the greatest in the world.

the beach resort of your dreams and a great carnival

"K2T Wisata"
Seven kilometers east from La Paloma and almost 250 kilometers from Montevideo lays the resort village of La Pedrera, a small and very charming place to spend your vacations in Uruguay, with fun and enjoyment guaranteed for all ages.
Its name literally means “the stone quarry”, as this resort of the department of Rocha was built over antique rocky formations that are over 500 million years old – from the Gondwana times. The place is therefore of great scientific and paleontological interest, as it is not rare to find, hidden in the rocks or lying on the sandy beaches, parts of fossils like i.e. those of glyptodonts.
The rocky formation is surrounded by two main beaches, “El Desplayado” facing the east, and “playa del Barco” facing the west. Barco means “ship” in Spanish – this beach got its name because the Chinese ship Cathay was wrecked in its coast in 1977.
This is a rare case for beaches in Uruguay: because both beaches are open to the Atlantic Ocean, there is not a “tame” beach and a “brave” beach, but both are quite “brave” and have big tides and very fresh and salty oceanic water. While “El Desplayado” is more flat and has thinner white sand, “playa del Barco” has a more golden and thicker sand, as well as deeper waters, making it ideal for surf and all water sports in Uruguay.
La Pedrera is also good for those who enjoy bird watching, as you can find a great variety of species in this resort, including the oyster catcher, the thrush, the lark and the red.
Traditionally a quiet place for family tourism in Uruguay, all beaches in Rocha have experimented growing popularity among young people in recent years. Particularly in La Pedrera, a “hippie – chic” atmosphere prevails, making it a target area for design exhibitions, special parties and events.
There are no big clubs but nightlife takes place in the main street, where restaurants play their music and people dance in the street. The carnival parties in February / March are especially big, every area of La Pedrera and nearby towns arranges a theme for their costumes, and groups or friends and families do the same. A costumes parade is held one of the days, and then parties take place all night long, with people enjoying the feeling of hiding behind the mask, costume and make up.
Also in January, and since 2004, there is an annual special: La Pedrera Short Film Festival, with the participation of films from several countries.

Improve Food Security

"K2T Wisata"

It’s no secret that the Gulf states are heavily dependent on foreign farmlands for their food and no more so than the United Arab Emirates which imports 80% of its food products. Most foods you see stocked in the UAE’s supermarkets will have been brought in from elsewhere ready to sell directly to the consumer and only a tiny portion (around 20-25%) are from locally processed foods.
However, the oil-rich nation has realised the dangers of this crippling food dependency (particularly in an unstable economy) and launched plans to establish a government-owned trading house aimed at securing food supplies.

Ahead French Toast

"K2T Wisata"
Today I decided to highlight my freezer french toast recipe because it would make the perfect breakfast to serve for Thanksgiving. Yes, I know Thanksgiving is all about the turkey and dinner, but my family always loves a nice breakfast on holidays.
A special breakfast is one more way to make Thanksgiving even more memorable.
I have made this recipe for holiday breakfasts for years. What I always loved about this recipe is that I could make it several weeks in advance and freeze it. Then it is ready and waiting whenever I need it during the holidays.
If you are looking for an easy make ahead breakfast to serve, this is a perfect one to try.
I will say for my gluten free readers that I have tried this with gluten free bread and it just doesn’t work well. The texture of gluten free bread is just not the same as regular bread and it did not work well for this. I am going to try to tweak some things though and try to figure it out. I would love to be able to eat this again.

watch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade

"K2T Wisata"
By Suzanne Russo in New York—
Macy’s is the second largest consumer of helium in the nation (behind the U.S. government). What’s a retail store doing with all that hot air? Supplying us with a Thanksgiving tradition, that’s what. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, with its characteristic enormous balloons, is nearly as ubiquitous in homes throughout the U.S. as are turkey and mashed potatoes. 2010 marks the 84th anniversary of the parade.
We know with an estimated 3.5 million people lining Manhattan’s streets to catch a glimpse of floating Spider-Man and Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, heading out yourself can seem like a bit of a nightmare, but we have a few tips to make it all worthwhile.
The Route (and Where to Watch)
Kermit floats by
Floating Kermit. Photo: MJStewart
The parade starts at 77th Street and makes its way around Central Park, first south along Central Park West, then curving at Columbus Circle to head east on Central Park South. It will turn south down 7th Avenue until 42nd Street, where it will go east for a quick block before moving south again down 6th Avenue. At 34th it will head back west to 7th Avenue and its final destination: Herald Square and Macy’s itself. Got that?
Not to worry: All you need to keep in mind are three segments, our short list of best places to watch. We factored proximity to food and facilities into our choices, in addition, of course, to good views.
1. Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street
Subway: B/D/F/M to Bryant Park, N/Q/R/1/2/3/7 to Times Square
The 6th Avenue stretch is a wider street, which means more space on the sidewalk for onlookers, so pretty much anywhere on 6th will do, but the corner of 6th Avenue and 42nd Street is a particularly good vantage point. Floats move down 42nd from 7th Avenue, so at that corner you’ll have a direct view. Along Bryant Park is also lovely, but we do recommend staying north of 38th Street so as to give a bit of berth to the chaos that will be Herald Square.
Where to fuel up
Grab coffee (and a delicious pastry) at the Pain Quotidien on 40th Street and 6th Avenue, just across from Bryant Park.
2. Columbus Circle and Time Warner Center
Subwaway: A/B/C/D/1/2 to Columbus Circle, N/Q/R to 57th Street/7th Avenue
If you’re claustrophobic, this area tends to be a little less crowded. We should caveat: It tends to be a little less crowded because higher winds in this small stretch sometimes spur balloon teams to race through a little quicker. That being said, they won’t be whizzing past fast enough that you’ll miss them, and you may be able to evade some of the throngs over here, on the west side of the circle.
Click to see these locations on Google maps.
An added bonus is that the Time Warner Center is a great place to avoid the elements. If it’s a nasty day, just head up to the second floor to watch from the windows there.
Where to fuel up
The Whole Foods on the lower level of the Time Warner Center is perfect for a quick cuppa joe and a muffin.
If you’d rather indulge before the evening feast, dig into a flaky croissant or a fluffy, fresh donut at Bouchon Bakery on the third floor.
Also up there is Landmarc, a sit-down restaurant that’s keeping a whole room free of seating for guests to watch the parade. The menu is not totally un-Cheapo either: We like the egg sandwich with gruyere and bacon or sausage for $10. Note that reservations are only available for parties of six or more, so plan to arrive early and secure your spot.
3. Central Park
Subway Stops: 1 or 2 to Lincoln Center, A/B/C to 72nd Street
It’s never bad to be hanging out along Central Park, so it’s a great thing that the parade makes its way down Central Park West. The parade starts at 77th Street, so anywhere south of that is grand. (We’ve heard that from 61st Street to 72nd Street is a good stretch.)
Where to fuel up
Pick up some coffee at the Ferrara Italian Cafe kiosk (at the entrance to the park, right near Columbus circle) before moving north on Central Park West.
Or hang out around what was once the enchanting Tavern on the Green, which is now an inviting visitor center (Central Park at 67th Street). The center itself will be closed that day, but the (clean) public restrooms should be open, and at least one of the food trucks who hang out outside will be serving up sustenance.
Sugar fiends should note that Magnolia Bakery (69th Street and Columbus Avenue) is just a block from the park and will be serving up their heavenly confections and signature blend coffee on the big day.
The Basics: How to survive the parade
Timing: So you’ve scouted your spot. What time to arrive? Early. The parade starts at 9 a.m. at 77th Street, but wherever you choose to watch it, crowds will already be forming at least two hours in advance. We recommend getting to your chosen spot by at least 7 a.m., earlier if you’re concerned about being up front.
Clothing: Also, it’ll be chilly that early on a November morning, so layer up, and bring along a thermos or two of something warm to keep you going while you wait.
Thanksgiving Eve Inflation Celebration
Another option is heading out the day before for a little pre-parade revelry. Balloon inflation has become just as big a draw as the parade itself.
Public viewing is from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m on the two streets flanking the American Museum of Natural History, 77th Street on the south and 81st Street on the north. The entry point is 77th Street and Columbus, and from there the action winds northeast up to 81st Street. The area is sectioned off so that crowds can move through in a semi-orderly fashion.
The real action takes place around 5 p.m., but as can be expected it gets crowded around then too, so if you can show up earlier, it’s worth it to get close to big balloons when they’re spread out flat and being prepped. Likewise, don’t worry if you show up a little later. It all moves along pretty well.
Did Ya Know?
Finally, five fun Macy’s Parade facts for your reading enjoyment:
1. Zoo-crazy: During the first years of the parade (which started in 1924) the Macy’s employees who marched in costume—think cowboys and sheiks and knights, oh my!—brought along animals from the Central Park Zoo to join them. Donkeys and goats paraded down the street, and one year there were even lions and tigers and bears. Until, that is, they terrified small children.
2. Burst your balloon: The first balloon, in 1928, was Felix the Cat. Because he was filled with helium only, and helium expands in high altitudes, Felix, sadly, popped.
3. Biggest balloon ever: It’s a balloon, it’s a parade, it’s Superman, way back in 1939.
4. The long way down: The first parade started at 145th Street, a 5.5 mile trek down to Macy’s.
5. Doggone popular: Since his debut in 1968, Snoopy has gone through six incarnations, making him the character with the most balloons.

I have never seen Katrina looking both hot and sensuous at the same time. In her earlier films, she’s dressed mostly like a Barbie doll Farah added, Katrina really trusted me and didn’t argue even once when I told her what she had to wear.
She just told me that she needs to start working out and tone her body more”
“Her dedication is tremendous. She didn’t feel awkward with so many men around.
The more they screamed and cheered for her, the more she got a high and her energy levels increased.”

America is on the outside looking in this time. When I was living in Japan, I can't remember how many times I had to wait months for a new release American flick to come to Japan.
It seemed as if my friends and family in the US were watching sequels before I got to see part one.
Not any more. Sony Pictures, owner of Spider-Man 3 released the movie on May 1st in Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, China, Germany, France and other markets 3 days before it will be released in America or the UK.
Problem for me is…now I am in the states eating my heart out because my Japanese friends are now getting a first look.spider%20man%203.jpg
Can't win for trying.
Not only did Toby Maquire, Kirsen Dundst and company break records in Tokyo, they also broke records for opening days in Seoul.
Spider-Man 3 is already doing better than Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. The question is whether or not Spidey can climb all the way to the top of the movie rankings and topple Titanic…which has grossed more than $600 million.
It seems that the Spider-Man trilogy is sure to reach the $1 billion in ticket sale milestone since Spider-Man took in $403 million and Spider-Man 2 took in $373 million.
Will you be going to see Spider-Man 3?

Show Me Japan

Welcome to the first edition of our Show Me Japan experiment where our aim is to show Japan to as many people as possible.

And yes, I am nervous. I have no clue if anyone is going to participate. And I have no idea how it's going to go. But for now, let's roll with the punches.

So why don't I start and show you a photo from Konpira shrine on the island of Shikoku, OK?
Here we go:

It's a lovely place consisting mostly of steps.

There are 1 368 steps altogether. After climbing half way up, I was sick of them.

I was so tired of steps I didn't want to look at them anymore.

So instead, I looked at other things.

People compare that place to Nikko, but seriously, whoever said that has never been to Nikko. It's a lovely place, but trust me, Nikko it ain't. Most definitely.

France Done With Adidas

France has two reasons to celebrate with their victory over the English yesterday. Pushing nostalgia aside in favor of monetary gains, they’ve dropped 40 years worth of adidas gear in favor of Nike, making yesterday’s friendly the adidas swansong. (Photos here, tissue not supplied.)
But more to the point: in favor of the most expensive shirt deal in the game. €42.6m a year – up from €13m via adidas – they’ll net for this little venture, just for wearing a swoosh instead of three stripes. (The deal will begin in January, and run through 2018.)
Can it be that easy?

For a look back in time, here’s an excellent breakdown of some of the more notable Franco-German collaborations through the years.
However, most importantly: with a fresh new kit on the way, replacing that bra-strappy futuristic technology offered by adidas, and not minutes after dropping the old lover, we’ve got a mock-up:

It’s unlikely anyone involved with the upcoming drill in Bahrain will be giggling as members from several important agencies gather for three days to stage a dreaded BP-esque oil spill disaster, because an oil spill in Bahrain has the unwelcome potential to shut down desalination plants and a vibrant fishing industry. … [visit site to read more]

Homemade Raspberry Sauce, cheesecake

"K2T Wisata"
Homemade fruit sauces are so easy to make.
They are very versatile and can be used on anything from pancakes, waffles, and french toast, to desserts like my mom’s easy cheesecake or the white chocolate cheesecake pictured above.  ( The recipe for the white chocolate cheesecake will be posted soon. It was one of the best cheesecakes that I have ever made)
I love to make homemade fruit sauces because the taste and texture is so much better than the canned versions that you can buy. It really does make a difference to make your own.
My favorite sauce to make is the raspberry sauce I am sharing today.
A  homemade sauce like this can turn a simple breakfast or dessert into a special one.

Homemade Raspberry Sauce

  • 12 ounces of frozen raspberries
  • 1/4 cup sugar (a little more if you want it sweeter)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  1. Combine raspberries and sugar in a pan.
  2. In a small bowl combine water and cornstarch until combined and add to raspberry/sugar mixture.
  3. Cook over medium low heat, stirring often until the raspberries have cooked down and the sauce is thickened. This will take 7-10 minutes.

fun in La Paloma

"K2T Wisata"

240 kilometers from Montevideo, and 90 from Punta del Este, La Paloma is an old beach resort of the department of Rocha. Founded in 1874 in Cabo de Santa María, it has 20km of beaches, which are the favorite of the many Uruguayan youth that spend their vacations in Uruguay, though not well known by foreign tourists.
Until a few years ago, La Paloma used to be a traditional beach resort for the enjoyment and rest of the whole family, where it was often very calm and quiet. Nevertheless, in the last decade things changed. The popularity of La Paloma increased among young people because of the great availability of accommodation in private houses, cabins and camping areas, and also because of the intensive nightlife of the resort.
But youth tourism is not there during the whole summer season, but it is concentrated on the first half of January. Young people arrive in general in big groups of friends and they find accommodation in the houses, cabins and camping areas, where they follow an alternative life rhythm.
They wake up around noon and go, in general, to the beach La Aguada, where they can enjoy the sun during morning hours. After a late lunch, and maybe a short nap in the shade, the meeting place for the afternoon is La Balconada beach, where the sand dune is very steep and serves as a balcony with a view of the ocean and a spectacular sunset.
After sunset vacations in Uruguay include, in general, a traditional asado –BBQ- dinner with friends or family. The BBQ soon turns into a “previa”, where wine, beer or other drinks are shared with friends while waiting for the time to go clubbing.
Nightlife is centered in the discos, in the area that separates the beach of La Aguada from the rest of the peninsula. Clubs are empty at least until 3am, which is why some take a nap before going out. The night at the disco becomes a morning at the disco, but fun never stops: the clubs remain open until around midnight and everyone chooses his or her own time to return home. Sunglasses are a must have for dancing during sunrise.
After a night of party the wake up time can be later, maybe just on time for an afternoon lunch and a quick walk to La Balconada beach for a new sunset…  and then make it all over again!
But La Paloma is not only for young people. Also children and adults find lots of joy in the wonderful beaches of La Paloma, the lighthouse with a fabulous view of the town and the surroundings, and the mandatory stop at the traditional creamery Popi, with its colorful plastic cups and the famous ice cream flavor “dulce de leche Popi”, a must-try for all those planning tourism in Uruguay.

the Balearic Islands

"K2T Wisata"

The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, close to the eastern side of the Iberian Peninsula. There are many islands, the greatest being Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The islands are an all-time favorite for tourism in Spain, their popularity proved by the many flights to Spain that fly to these destinations directly from all parts of Europe.
Now for this season, since last October and until February 2011, seniors wishing to spend their vacations in Spain can do so in the three greater Balearic Islands: Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. There will also be a few spots available for trips to Formentera.
Finding hotels in Spain is not always easy, but 276 travel agencies from Spain, based in those four islands, have created special packages for these seniors including accommodation in a 3-star hotel with full board, round-trip flights, entertainment, sanitary assistance and travel insurance.
The initiative is promoted by the Advisor of Tourism and Labor for the Balearic Islands, Joana Barceló. This way, a total of 9251 seniors –retired or over 65 years old- will get a one week of vacations in Spain for a convenient fee.

Five traditions of Spain

"K2T Wisata"

Since 2008, the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was created by UNESCO as a program seeking for a better protection and awareness of the significance of intangible cultural heritage as essential for creative expression and cultural diversity. Now on November 16th, 2010, five traditions of Spain were added to that list during a meeting of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee in Nairobi, Kenia.
On the first place, shared with Greece, Italy and northern Morocco, there is the Mediterranean Diet, which is 9000 years old and has scientifically recognized benefits that explain its popularity. It consists mainly on a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and dried fruits, olive oil as the essential grease, lots of fish, bread and cereal (especially wheat) and a moderate consumption of meat and dairy.
The Mediterranean Diet has previously been recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (OMS) as an alimentary model of sustainable and healthy quality. While doing tourism in Spain, make sure to give it a try!
Then there is falconry, or hawking, a sport and millennial art in which birds of prey –especially falcons- are used either to hunt or to pursue game for the people involved. In this category, the joint postulation included the Arabian Emirates, Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Syria and Qatar.
Flamenco, an iconic representation of Spain in the world, was recognized this time, after a failed attempt in 2005 in a similar UNESCO category:  Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This traditional Andalusian dance is part of the identity of Spain and something not to be missed by all those who take a trip to Spain.
On the fourth place are the “castells”, human towers that are raised in the squares of Cataluña since 200 years ago. These expressions of the culture of Spain have reached the 10 stories, though only in two occasions.
Last but not least, the medieval Cant de la Sibilla –the song of the Sybil-  was also chosen.  It is a Gregorian chant and liturgical drama of a prophecy of the Apocalypse. Originated in the island of Mallorca, in Spain, this song is still performed on Christmas Eve in churches of both Mallorca and the Italian Alghero, in the Island of Sardinia.

Wines from all over the world

"K2T Wisata"

French wines have an undeniable strong tradition and high prestige. Nevertheless, in recent times, a tendency has consolidated on the willingness to discover new wines from all over the world.
The cosmopolitan and versatile city of Paris reflexes this new tendency in its wine cellars, which give tourists the chance to get to know French wines, but also wines from other regions of the world. For wine lovers, a trip to Paris is also a trip to many other places in the world.
In the internationally well-known Parisian avenue of Champs-Élysées, the Publicisdrugstore wine cellar has a great variety of wines to choose from. The sommelier Fabrice Tellier is in charge of selecting wines that match the personal preferences of each client. Also the Legrand filles et fils cellar, located in a former 18th century grocery store, offers samples of wines from Portugal, Israel, Australia and Switzerland.
With three stories and 1500 square meters, Lavinia is another Parisian brewery that offers over 2000 wines from 43 countries. Also Taillevent has some 1300 varieties of wines in a collection that is constantly renewed.
If you fashion vintage wines, Cave à Millésimes specializes in this kind of wines at an international level, and their location couldn’t be better: just a few steps from the Eiffel Tower, one of the main attractions of tourism in Paris.

November 18: Beer Can Chicken and Blueberry Moonshine (recipe included)
Our host smiled as she cracked open the can of Miller Lite and shoved it up the chicken’s ass. She tried to balance the whole thing on the grill but it kept tipping over spilling precious beer onto the coals which hissed their appreciation. I set down my coffee cup, set the can (and bird) upright again, and pushed down on the chicken until it settled over the can and coals.
We all stood and watched it to make sure it would stay in place, before putting the lid on the grill and we walked back over to the picnic table
The dogs – three we brought with us to the country and the four who live there – lounged around the patio in the shade of the little log cabin, tired from chasing each other around the fields.  We humans sat at the table and talked about nothing in particular while beer steam poured out of the holes in the grill lid.
Sundays in North Carolina can be quiet when NASCAR isn’t in town.
The temperature dropped quickly after the sun set, and when it was finished we decided to eat our chicken inside where it was warm. The steam/grilling made the meat tender and juicy, a nice complement to fresh salad and home-made macaroni and cheese.
After supper we sat around the table talking about adventures and families while my mind fuzzed over from the whiskey and the memory of the day. Suddenly a jar appeared in front of me and our host stood back laughing.
“See, blueberry moonshine!” she said.
It’s a reasonable story, somebody’s brother has a friend who knows a guy and perfectly normal people living in a hand built log cabin end up with a jar of magical blueberries and purple juice.
It tasted more like blueberry infused vodka then any homebrew I’ve ever had, but it was delicious whatever it was, and amazingly the blueberries were still crunchy!
The perfect finish to a wonderful afternoon.
RECIPE:
Take one whole chicken, rub it down with olive oil and sprinkle liberally with Lawry’s seasoning salt. Shove a can of beer up its butt. Put it on the grill. When steam stops coming out of the chickens neck, check for doneness, then serve on a platter. (Removal of the beer can is optional depending on your décor.)
Don’t ask me about the moonshine, you’ve gotta know a guy to get the recipe for that.

new literary hotel in Paris

"K2T Wisata"

So you have traveled a lot and stayed in all kind of hotels: from the small cozy ones to the big luxurious chains, and through most of those in between. Now you are planning a trip to Paris and looking for a nice and different hotel in Paris, one with an atmosphere that would enhance your trip and make it special? Then you might like La Belle Juliette.
Opening the 31st of December of this year, La Belle Juliette will be a brand new literary hotel in Paris. Smoothly combining luxury with a quite discrete charm of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés mythical district, the hotel will be located on 92 rue du Cherche-Midi, Paris 6th.
For the concept and design, the hotel owners – Pascal and Corinne Moncelli- found inspiration on the world of “la Belle Juliette”, a historic character of the literary circles of Paris in the 19th century, whose real name was Juliette Récamier. Haute couture designer Anne Gelbard was hired to give the hotel the atmosphere of literary salons of the 19th century, mixing a contemporary touch with furniture of a classical spirit.
Aside from the 34 hotel rooms, guests doing tourism in Paris can also rest and relax in the literary bar of the hotel, called the Talma, studying original engravings or going through the old books. La Belle Juliette is set to innovate the concept of hotels in Paris and you will not be disappointed.
