fun in La Paloma

"K2T Wisata"

240 kilometers from Montevideo, and 90 from Punta del Este, La Paloma is an old beach resort of the department of Rocha. Founded in 1874 in Cabo de Santa María, it has 20km of beaches, which are the favorite of the many Uruguayan youth that spend their vacations in Uruguay, though not well known by foreign tourists.
Until a few years ago, La Paloma used to be a traditional beach resort for the enjoyment and rest of the whole family, where it was often very calm and quiet. Nevertheless, in the last decade things changed. The popularity of La Paloma increased among young people because of the great availability of accommodation in private houses, cabins and camping areas, and also because of the intensive nightlife of the resort.
But youth tourism is not there during the whole summer season, but it is concentrated on the first half of January. Young people arrive in general in big groups of friends and they find accommodation in the houses, cabins and camping areas, where they follow an alternative life rhythm.
They wake up around noon and go, in general, to the beach La Aguada, where they can enjoy the sun during morning hours. After a late lunch, and maybe a short nap in the shade, the meeting place for the afternoon is La Balconada beach, where the sand dune is very steep and serves as a balcony with a view of the ocean and a spectacular sunset.
After sunset vacations in Uruguay include, in general, a traditional asado –BBQ- dinner with friends or family. The BBQ soon turns into a “previa”, where wine, beer or other drinks are shared with friends while waiting for the time to go clubbing.
Nightlife is centered in the discos, in the area that separates the beach of La Aguada from the rest of the peninsula. Clubs are empty at least until 3am, which is why some take a nap before going out. The night at the disco becomes a morning at the disco, but fun never stops: the clubs remain open until around midnight and everyone chooses his or her own time to return home. Sunglasses are a must have for dancing during sunrise.
After a night of party the wake up time can be later, maybe just on time for an afternoon lunch and a quick walk to La Balconada beach for a new sunset…  and then make it all over again!
But La Paloma is not only for young people. Also children and adults find lots of joy in the wonderful beaches of La Paloma, the lighthouse with a fabulous view of the town and the surroundings, and the mandatory stop at the traditional creamery Popi, with its colorful plastic cups and the famous ice cream flavor “dulce de leche Popi”, a must-try for all those planning tourism in Uruguay.
