Regents met with school President William Powers Jr. to discuss the plan and then publicly voted to allow Powers to pursue and sign a contract for the network.
ESPN has been in talks with the university to distribute the network.
The school has been considering creating their own network for several years and was one of the reasons the school chose to stay in the Big 12 rather than accept an offer to join the Pac-10.
According to The Associated Press, a Longhorn Network would be Texas-specific programing, with Texas football and basketball rights are now being part of deals the Big 12 conference has with ESPN/ABC and Fox.
