For a while we have been informing on different statistics for tourism in Berlin, which seemed to be recovering and slowly increasing. The city has become a very popular destination for tourists, and 2010 was a year of success. According to the Statistics Office of Berlin-Brandenburg, 20.8 million room nights were booked in hotels in Berlin, a rise of 10.2%.

The city was on this track a while ago, when it informed it had exceeded the 20 million mark. But figures could have been even better: “A higher result was only impaired by the freak weather in December. The partly extreme traffic conditions on the roads, railway tracks and airports prevented many visitors from traveling to Berlin at the end of the year,” said Burkhard Kieker, CEO of the city’s tourism promoter visitBerlin.

Over 9 million people took a trip to visit Berlin in 2010, which is an increase of 9.5% for this German capital. Visitors from other parts of Germany increased 7.3%, but the higher contribution came from abroad. In the words of Kieker, “this shows that our focus on foreign activities bears fruit and that we get closer to our long-term objective of further stepping up the share of foreign visitors.”

With the winter now behind, and the weather slowly getting warmer, Berlin is preparing itself for a spring and a summer of an even higher increase in the number of people who choose to take vacations in Berlin and do some tourism in this dynamic, cosmopolitan and ever-changing city, where history meets modern art and the acceptance of diversity, open mindedness and goodwill.

Efforts to promote Berlin will now continue, with the city trying to position itself in the mind of all those thinking of visiting big cities in Europe and learning more about it. It is in Berlin where you get a synthesis of recent past, the wars and the differences and points of encounter between Eastern and Western Europe.
