Start 2011 in Playa del Carmen

"K2T Wisata"

A new year recharges our energies and projects for the times to come. ¿What would be best than saying goodbye to 2010 and starting 2011 with all the energy in Playa del Carmen, Mexico? And which better way to do it than attending the annual Electronic Music BPM Festival?
The dates of the festival were announced today. It will go from this December 31st, 2010, to January 9th, 2011. The BPM takes place every year in the beginning of January in the idyllic beach of Mexico, Playa del Carmen, which is close to Cancun.
Originally designed as an event of social networking for the dance music industry elites, the festival has evolved to become today an international mixture of electronic music lovers, DJs, producers, partygoers and revelers. BPM includes international DJs and producers like Dubfire, Lee Burridge, Guy Gerber, Steve Lawler, M.A.N.D.Y., Steve Angello, Victor Calderone and Sander Kleinenberg.
The festival is the perfect opportunity to enjoy amazing vacations in Mexico, escape the routine and shorten the winter –if you are coming from the Northern hemisphere- while enjoying the sun and the beaches of Mexico.

A special place in Ipanema

"K2T Wisata"
Starting the 60s, the carioca musical duo of Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes made famous the Ipanema neighborhood, located in the southern area of Rio de Janeiro, with the song “Garota de Ipanema”, which first got to the radio in 1962. Even nowadays, you can often listen to this song on the radio.
It was since then that the beaches of Rio de Janeiro got full of both cariocas and tourists that allowed the charisma and restlessness of the beaches and streets of Ipanema, with its bars, restaurants and many entertainment options, to catch that spirit.
Thinking of the link between the hospitality of the neighborhood and the important musical trajectory of Tom and Vinicius, three friends gathered and created, in a house Tom Jobim inhabited from 1962 to 1965, the Bonita Pousada Ipanema –beautiful inn of Ipanema in English-, a welcoming cozy construction housing 24 rooms and a swimming pool for guests.
Do you enjoy the music from Tom and Vinicius? Are you planning your trip to Rio de Janeiro? You may want to consider this offer of a hotel in Rio de Janeiro for your accommodation. It is a great combination of rest, music and energy.

Kiwi Knights

Earlier this year (2010), two guys from New Zealand set out on a hike. Okay, not unusual for “Kiwis”. They seem to like hiking. But, this trek is somewhat unique as it follows the path of the Templar Knights which is not your normal modern-day quest. They’ve had their ups and downs – but, the real question is – will they succeed?

Charles Barkley weighs in on Auburn’s

"K2T Wisata"
We all know what when Charles Barkley opens up about a subject, he can be as open and as frank as anyone. Take for example, his thoughts on Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.
Former NBA great and Auburn fan Charles Barkley spoke about the Cam Newton allegations on Friday. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, File)
Barkley, who attended Auburn, was on WJOX radio in Birmingham and here are some of Sir Charles’ ideas concerning the Newton situation.
On his initial thoughts when hearing about the allegations against Cam Newton:
“Well I think you get mad, number one.  First of all, let’s look at one thing, I don’t have clean hands.  What I mean by that, clearly I am an Auburn fan, so I’m slanted toward Auburn but you can say anything about anybody and unfortunately nowadays, the media, a lot of them are scumbags and what I mean by that is, you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent now.”
What he thinks about the alleged $120,000–180,000 Cam Newton’s father was asking for:
“Well first of all let me just say one thing about that.  First of all, this is a joke now.  First of all I don’t know what happened about that, but if that guy only asked for $200K for Cam Newton they should fire him anyway.”
More of Barkley’s comments can be seen at Sports Radio Interviews.

The Fate Of Football’s Future

"K2T Wisata"
3701499Today is a very, very sad day. Not 24 hours ago we had such promise on the footballing horizon in the form of Wang Dalei, a man who loved microblogging and we loved his candor.
Since his soul pouring outrage he has been suspended indefinitely, been forced to issue an apology which sounds closer to castration and the entire blogging site has been shut down by Chinese authorities.
Don’t they know they’re biting the hand that feeds?

And all this when his “tirade” wasn’t even that bad.
“I’m sorry for my ‘microblog things’. I want to say sorry for all the fans and reporters in China,” he said.
“My childish and irresponsible words harmed the image of my team, the delegation and China’s sports.”
“And I also pleaded to all the fans, especially the fans hurt by my words, to forgive me this time. Please understand me. We were not easy (in the tournament),” he added.
And so continues the further sterilization of football interviews. The powers that be won’t be happy until everyone’s reading from preselected, preapproved answer cards which have shown not to upset women ages 18-45, men ages 32-59 and pygmy aeronautic engineers with cleft palettes.
The whole sport’s going downhill.

The Perfect Christmas Gift

"K2T Wisata"
1111-VUVU_full_600
Looking for a Christmas gift for that special someone who loves football and isn’t picky about wearing plastic, possibly ridden with spittle, jewelery? Look no further than the vuvuzela earrings.
These are the same earrings which won the design contest from a few days back, but this is the first glimpse we have of the actual product prototype. They’re…colorful. And yes, they’re actually going into mass(ish) production.
I can’t imagine you’ll find these at Cartier anytime soon, though you can bet someone will try, but hey, it’s certainly a great improvement on their more popular use and they wouldn’t look at all out of place with a decent makarapa. (Also not to be found at fine, upstanding jewelers.)

Japanese Translation

"K2T Wisata"
When I lived in Japan, I often got asked to do translation work….usually on a Friday.

The usual scenario was somebody in a Japanese company was given the job of putting something into English or vice versa. Not able to decline, the workerbee told their boss s/he would try and then went at it.

However, come Friday of the Monday before it is due,japan.translation.png s/he would realize they really couldn’t do it after all.

A phone call would come to me.

“Please can you translate this?”

“Uh, yeah. By when?”

“We need the 20 pages by Monday.”

And my weekend would be shot.

Why do I always get the feeling I was born too soon?

Japan Translation can handle just such a scenario.

And…handle it well….for three reasons.

1. Japan Translation is a Japanese translation agency physically locaded in Japan, so clients get access to a wide choice of native Japanese translators with the specialized knowledge requires. There is no better translation team than native speakers of the languages working together.

2. Japan Translation has a large network of translators and copyrwriters. If there is not an available specialist already in the network, Japan For translation quality assurance, Japan Translation is the right place to start to find one.

3.  Sales and customer service is handled by professional, native speaking English Americans in Tokyo and Osaka. The Japanese are good people. But, when you are negotiating the finer points of a contract and want to get the nuances right in a translation…all service in English is critical.

Are Japanese the only ones who know customer service? I was beginning to think so until Japan Translation came along.

Think – American ‘can do’ attitude with the quality of ‘customer first’ that Japan Translation has acquired after years in Japan.

What I want to know is, can I have my weekends back, please?

Trees Or Water

"K2T Wisata"
As the reality of its dire water straits settles in, Abu Dhabi must prioritize what is grown and where.
The planet is heating up, creating change. And with those changes we have new choices. Hard choices. In addition to numerous other functions, trees are necessary to absorb the deadly carbon emissions behind so many climatic upheavals. Without trees, the planet will heat up even faster and our air quality will worsen. Without water, on the other hand, life simply can’t exist; life grows where water flows.
So which is the lesser of two evils? Most people would agree that water must take precedence, particularly in the Middle East. Which is why, albeit admirable, an ongoing campaign to plant one million trees in Abu Dhabi seems like one more luxury the Emirate can scarcely afford. This is especially true in light of the rampant press coverage that Abu Dhabi has only days of backup water supply … [visit site to read more]

Eco-Sexy Erection Foods, Part II

"K2T Wisata"
Men from the Middle East don’t have to look far for the best diet for erectile health, says health experts. Read more about preventing erectile dysfunction in part II of this series.
Last week we looked at the diet on men’s sexual function. This week we continue: “The focus of the Mediterranean diet isn’t on limiting total fat consumption, but rather to make wise choices about the types of fat you eat,” explains the experts in an article on the Mayo Clinic website. Indeed, information like this might make fat and carb phobic eaters squirm, but only until they learn about the benefits of such a lifestyle to a man’s sexual wellbeing and performance.
In part I of this series, we introduced the Med diet in conjunction with National Impotence Awareness Month in the US (home to a large segment of Greenprophet readers), and focused on one building block of foods that make a man more vigorous: Proteins. This is good news for Middle East eaters who already consume more fish and poultry in their diets, but it’s bad news for red meat lovers; turns out, some proteins are better than others to a man’s favorite muscle. In part II, we’ll take you further on the journey, and do our best to convince you that this diet is scientifically the best aphrodisiac on the planet. … [visit site to read more]

Brasilia JK bridge

"K2T Wisata"
I don’t know whether the JK bridge is the most beautiful bridge in the world – an accolade it received from a professional organization not long ago. But it is, without a doubt, one of the shiniest stars in the architectural firmament that is Brasilia. Alexandre Chan created a bridge that was opened as recently as 2002.

Architecture history on tour, from Gothic to Gehry

"K2T Wisata"
By Joann Plockova in Prague
Prague offers so many varying styles of architecture that after a visit you can practically go home with a PhD. Within the city center and its immediate surroundings, you’ll find every architectural style from Gothic to Baroque, Cubism to Functionalism, and Art Noveau to the boxy beasts of Communism. And that’s not all of them.
This post presents a handful of the city’s great structures categorized according to style; a kind of architecture tour of Prague, if you will. And remember, it doesn’t cost anything to gaze at some of the finest examples of architecture in the world.

Gothic

Charles Bridge
Stare Mesto and Mala Strana
Construction of this epic bridge began in 1337 and was completed in the 15th century. The most distinguishing features of this stone bridge are its Baroque sculptures and statues that were added to the sides of it in the 1700’s. (Today’s are just replicas of the originals, which are housed inside the National Museum.)
Three towers are found at the entrances to the bridge, one on the side headed to Old Town and two on the Mala Strana side. The latter is considered one of Europe’s finest examples of civil Gothic architecture. As one of Prague’s most visited sites, it’s advised to visit at the crack of dawn or late night (which actually turn out to be the hours which suit this wonder best).
Others Gothic structures: The House of the Stone Bell, St. Vitus Cathedral, The Convent of St. Agnes

Renaissance

Ball Game Hall
Hradcany
Prague's Ball Game Hall
Ball Game Hall. Photo: Carolyn Will
Located within the Royal Garden of the castle, this sgraffito-adorned building was first built in the 16th century to serve as the Royal Game Hall for an early form of tennis and badminton. After transforming into the Royal Stables in the 17th century and then a military barrack and storeroom, the building was struck by a bomb during World War II and burned down to its outer wall.
Its restoration was completed in 1952, but the Royal Garden wasn’t opened again until after 1989. But the communists left their mark. On the front of the building, facing the garden, look out for their own sgraffito: the number five (for the “Five Year Plan”) and a hammer and sickle.
Other Renaissance examples: The Royal Summer Palace, Star Summer Palace, The House at the Minute

Baroque

Strahov Monastery
Strahovské nádvorí 132/1
Hradcany
Dating back to the 12th century, Strahov is Prague’s second oldest monastery (and it remains functioning today). Comprised of several buildings, its baroque library—including both the Theological Hall and the Philosophical Hall—are not to be missed. As it is perched atop a hill, its location offers some wonderful views of the city.
Other Baroque examples: St. Nicholas Cathedral, Troja Chateau, The Sternberg Palace.

Art Noveau

The Municipal House
Námestí Republiky 1090/5
Stare Mesto
Municipal House Prague
The Municipal House. Photo: Cristian Bredfeldt
Including gilded decorations, ceramics, stained glass windows, and murals, the Municipal House’s details, in combination with its impressive size, make it perhaps Prague’s most shining example of the style. Completed in 1911, its remarkable outcome is the work of prominent Czech sculptors and painters, including Alfons Mucha.
Saloun’s Villa
Slovenská 4/2499,
Vinohrady
A more off-the-beaten-path example, but definitely worth the journey, this great little structure is the former studio of Czech sculptor Ladislav Saloun, a leading figure of Czech Art Noveau symbolism. Designated as a protected cultural monument in 1958, today it serves as a teaching space for guest professors of the Academy of Fine Arts. You’ll find it in Prague’s Vinohrady neighborhood, to the side of a long set of stairs that run beside a park. Look out for the sculpted head above the doorway.

Cubism

House of the Black Madonna
Celetná 569/34
Stare Mesto
Cubism is special to the Czech Republic, as it is the only country where you will find Cubist architecture. One of the most renowned examples, the House of the Black Madonna was completed between 1911-1912 by architect Josef Gocar–one of the members of a famous group of Czech artists and architects who worked in the style. Appropriately, the house is home to the Museum of Czech Cubism and the Grand Café Orient, which boasts a cubist interior.
Kovarovic Villa
Libušina 3
Vyšehrad
Inspired by the works of Braque and Picasso, this exceptional villa is a must see. Not only is the house done in the cubist style, but also the garden layout, the surrounding metal fence and even the stairs.
Cubist Lamppost
Jungmannovo Namesti
It’s the only cubist lamppost in the world. Enough said.

Functionalism

Manes
Masarykovo nábreží 250/1
Stare Mesto
Opened in 1930, the Manes building is considered one of Europe’s top Functionalist buildings. Comprised of three floors, with the river running underneath it, Manes’ function since it was formed has been to serve as a visual arts exhibition hall.
Muller Villa
Nad hradním vodojemem 642/14
Strešovice
One of the most influential architects of Modern European architecture, Adolf Loos built this cubed-shaped home for the family after which it was named. Done in a design called “Raumplan,” the interior was conceived as spaces–as opposed to rooms, sections or floor plans–that flow into one another via multi-levels, according to function.

Communist Era

Panelaks
Prague's Panelaks
A Prague Panelak. Photo: Akb
From Prague’s highest points you can’t not see these structures. Situated on the outskirts of the city, these tall, gray boxes, sitting side by side, were actually inspired by Le Corbusier’s idea of people living in small, efficient cities. However, the outcome was blank buildings that feel completely devoid of inspiration. Due to the more affordable costs, this is where a large percentage of Praguers live today.
Other Communist examples: Kotva department store, The Zizkov Television Tower (as this is the highest structure in Prague, you can’t miss it on the skyline. It was started by the communists and is today characterized by large sculpted children climbing up its sides, made by controversial Czech artist David Cerny).

Post 1989

The Dancing House
Rašínovo nábreží 1981/80
Nove Mesto
Not much has been done in the way of interesting modern architecture in Prague at this point. The Dancing Building however is the one exception. Built by Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunic between 1992 and 1996, the structure rests on a formerly vacant riverfront plot where the building before had been destroyed by a bomb at the end of WWII. It’s sometimes referred to as the “Fred and Ginger Building,” as it was made to resemble two dancers.

St. Pete Beach, FL named Best New Design Hotel

"K2T Wisata"
This hotel true to its namesake, was recently named as one of the top nine "Best New Design Hotels" in the world!

Originally a Travelodge, the inn was recently made over by Philadelphia's SLDesign, which mixed vintage and modern--Eames chairs, Modernica stools there--for a neo-bohemian vibe driven home by the 1,200 feet of rope macraméd into a light fixture in the lobby.

Like its low-rise charm, the hotel rates are not through the roof. Florida residents enjoy a rate of $79/night. This throw-back-in-time hotel is a great stop if you're on a road trip. Day rates at this hotel are only $49.
