Setting Out

"K2T Wisata"

November 17: Setting out
Here is another shot from down by Lake Wylie this past weekend. My friend Sheree spends most weekends down here sailing. She says that no matter how crazy her week has been, everything is alright once she hits the water, and after hanging out at the club I can understand how she feels. Not everyone has the ability or desire to make long term travel a part of their life – but we all need place to get away and clear our heads. On race day, you can see the joy the sailors feel as they slip their boats into the water, the calm that comes over them as they paddle out into the breeze. You can almost watch the work week drifting away on the tide as they look forward to a day on the lake.

CPI (M) asks for clarifications to the PM

"K2T Wisata"
The CPI (M) (Communist Party of India- Marxist) claims that it had been asking the government to take a probe into the 2G spectrum allocation scam since 2008 but their continuous efforts were not even taken into consideration. Now the party wants the reason for it from the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
The statement from the party said, “The Prime Minister should explain in Parliament how this murky affair was allowed to go on for so long,”
The statement added, “It should be further asked why the Prime Minister refused to order a probe on the telecom scam for a longer period despite repeated requests”.
Just a few days ago, Telecom Minister A Raja had to resign from his post due to his involvement in one of the biggest scandals of the country.
The CPI (M) also wants the license of the companies to be cancelled who have got allocations illegally.

festival in Tochigi city

"K2T Wisata"
We love festivals. That much should be obvious by now to anyone who is not a first-time visitor to our blog. And even if you are a brand new reader (in that case - "Hello, nice to have you here! Make yourself at home!") or got here thanks to a poorly worded google search, it's going to become very apparent to you in... oh, right about now, that for us, matsuri (Japanese festivals) are a serious matter. A VERY serious matter.

So when a festival that is held only once every two years rolls around, you can bet your kifuda (木札) that we are going to be there.

And that's why last Saturday we took the Tobu line to Tochigi City to attend the famed Aki Matsuri there.

The Autumn Festival had looked so lovely on a computer screen. Huge, lavishly decorated floats (dashi - 山車), blue sky, hordes of tekomai decked out in their finest festive attire, shaking their staffs and chanting during buttsuke, and massive crowds of people. It was going to be nothing short of awesome. That should have been a no-brainer, right?

Well, it didn't quite turned out that way.

I'm not sure, maybe it's me, but while I didn't exactly hate the festival, I wasn't exactly impressed either. It was... hmmm... how to put it nicely... Boring.

 Float detail

Yes, the floats were magnificent, and the nighttime parade sufficiently impressive. But with its carefully orchestrated photo ops and participants that looked like they were being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment, the whole festival took on a very bleh aura.

 More float detail

The float teams looked bored to tears or downright unhappy. Their energy level and enthusiasm peaked at about minus five (on a scale from zero to... well... zero) and looking at their sour faces was not particularly joy inspiring.

 Only the mask is smiling

And don't even get me started on the vicious and nasty attendees, many of whom would have no quips at all about stabbing you to death with their monopod to get a better viewing place.

Maybe I'm too provincial for such a huge event with so many people. But Miya Matsuri is also a huge event. And the attendees are also nasty and vicious. But at least they apologize before stabbing you to death. And Miya's participants look like (or at the very least - pretend like) they're having fun.

Yes, Tochigi's floats were awesome, but so were the yatai in Moka and Kanuma. (They call them dashi in Tochigi City, but yatai in Moka and Kanuma).

Yes, the buttsuke in Tochigi was impressive, but the over zealous security people did their best to treat you like an unruly five year old child. Move back, stay behind the white line, do not cross. In Moka and Kanuma nobody shoos you away from the action. Quite the opposite in fact, you are invited by the handlers to get closer and get crazy with the rest of them.

Still, I understand, different places do things in different ways. That much could be expected.

So what is the number one difference between a good festival and a mediocre one? In addition to friendliness, smiley faces, positive energy and helpful men with orange glow sticks?

The hair. And that's a fact.

Golden Sheep

"K2T Wisata"
golden sheepThe Golden Sheep makes Palestinians proud with gourmet Italian cheese.
The Arab Geographer al-Muqaddasi wrote between the 9th and 11th centuries that while Palestine has olives, dried figs, raisins and the Carob fruit, Jerusalem has cheeses, Aninuni and Duri raisins, apples, and pine nuts.
More recently, an influx of foreigners – including Italians – broadened Palestine’s menu, bringing olive oil, oregano, and baked bread.
Today a whole new flavor has emerged, reports Christian Monitor correspondent and former Green Prophet contributor Daniella Cheslow, except this time a Palestinian master cheesemaker flew to Italy to study their craft and brought it back home.     … [visit site to read more]

Iran Take Top 2 Endangered Species Design Prizes

"K2T Wisata"
designboom-life-tracksArtists bridge the divide and draw attention to the plight of endangered species.
Israel and Iran may be arch enemies politically, but a recent design competition demonstrates that their artists are more alike than different. Although we have featured many Israeli designs in the past, such as these outrageous shoes and this lovely ceramic e-cooler designed by the Boaz couple, we have had fewer opportunities to show off the good work coming out of Iran.
But that does not mean that none exists. One of the world’s most foremost night sky photographers is an Iranian whose art both delights and unites its viewers. And yesterday designboom announced that an Iranian student took second place in an international competition designed to draw attention to the plight of endangered species. An Israeli student won with a beautiful design called “Life Tracks.” … [visit site to read more]

Hungry for Paris

My friend and superb restaurant critic Alec Lobrano has updated his bestselling book Hungry for Paris. Hungry for Paris was first published in 2008 to rave reviews and has become an indispensable source for avid foodies combing the city for the best restaurants. In the 2010 edition Alec has removed some restaurants that are no longer worthy of his 102 favorites and has added some welcome new finds. Mon Viel Ami has failed to make the grade again and even though Alec still likes the food, according to many readers complaints the service is poor and reservation system problematic. Also axed were Bath's, which has closed, and D'Chez Eux, where the ownership changed hands and had a big effect on the food and atmosphere. Jadis and Frenchie are new entries and they feature modern bistro cuisine with rising new chefs. A la Biche au Bois serving classic French food at budget prices was also added. The new edition pretty much sticks to the old one, which offers a carefully hand picked list of 102 of most delicious restaurants, bistros, and brasseries in Paris from haute cuisine to down home cooking.

Pumpkin Bread

"K2T Wisata"
In case you can not tell by the amount of pumpkin recipes that I have been posting, we love pumpkin in our house, especially around the holidays.
One of our favorite holiday recipes to make is the Delicious Pumpkin Bread I posted about a few years ago. I have been making it for years and my family looks forward to it each year around the holidays.
This pumpkin bread is really more of a dessert than a bread, but I serve it either way. My kids think I am a wonderful mom when I let them have it for breakfast, but that does not happen often because it is not the healthiest of recipes, but oh is it good.
I recently adapted this holiday favorite to be gluten free. I posted it yesterday in my allergy section. If you are gluten free or have a family member that is gluten free this would be a perfect holiday bread or dessert to make.

Cranberry Sauce

"K2T Wisata"
I don’t know about you, but I grew up eating the cranberry sauce from a can. You know the kind where you can see the lines from the can indented in it. Yes, that is the cranberry sauce that made an appearance at our Thanksgiving table every year.
Because of this I grew up thinking that I did not like cranberry sauce, but really it was just the canned cranberry sauce that I did not like.
It was not until I made my own homemade cranberry sauce that I discovered that I actually enjoyed it. I realized that cranberry sauce could be good.
And not only does homemade cranberry sauce taste so much better, it is actually quite easy to make.
There are a lot of versions for homemade cranberry sauce with extra ingredients added in, but I like to keep it simple and basic.
One of the things I like about homemade cranberry sauce is that you can make it ahead. This can easily be made several days before Thanksgiving, which is always nice during the busy holidays.
If you have never tried making cranberry sauce you really should give it a try.
Do you like cranberry sauce? And if your answer is no, have you ever tried the homemade kind?

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (12 ounce bag) fresh cranberries
  1. In a pan bring sugar, water, and salt to a boil.
  2. Stirring occasionally until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Stir in the cranberries and reduce heat to a simmer.
  4. Stir until sauce is thickened and cranberries begin to break open.
  5. This takes about 15 minutes.
  6. Cool to room temperature for at least 1 hour before serving. This will thicken some as it cools.
  7. Serve and enjoy!

The Enchanted Woodland offers a wintery escape

"K2T Wisata"
By Lara Kavanagh in London
As the weather in London grows frosty and thoughts turn to frantic Christmas shopping, it’s a good time to escape the high street and pursue some Christmassy activities out in the increasingly fresh air.
One excellent refuge is the magical Enchanted Woodland, which returns to Syon Park, the grounds of stately home Syon House, from November 19 to December 5, 2010.
Into the grounds
The best place to start is at the cozy onsite café, where you can purchase a hot drink to take with you down the winding path laid out in stunning gardens. Many elements of the grounds, from huge trees to shrubs, and even the waters of the lake, are dramatically illuminated in vibrant blues, pinks, greens and yellows, lending a fantastical air to the surrounding nature.
As you wonder through the breathtakingly altered landscape, there are plenty of surprises in store, including occasional audio excerpts, stand-alone light installations, and even the occasional tiny fairy dangling from a branch.
Furthermore, unlike other public attractions where you aren’t allowed to take any photos of your experience, here you’re encouraged to snap away at the various installations to your heart’s content. For just £5 entry for adults, and a mere £2 for children, the Enchanted Woodland is a Cheapo-friendly, family-friendly, Christmas-spirit-friendly event, and parking is free.
What to wear
You’ll need your winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves, and maybe an umbrella to be on the safe side, and although there are no hills to navigate, sturdy footwear is recommended for treading any uneven ground in the park.
