Australian selector Greg Chappell has said that he will want Australia to go into the first Test match at Gabba in Brisbane with one specialist spinner. Australia play England in the first Ashes Test match from November 25.
Chappell said that the track may assist seam bowlers but it is difficult to get the balance required if the side had four pace bowlers and no spinners on any track. England had won the previous Ashes in the final Test match of the series after the Aussies had gone in with an all-pace attack on a track that spun very early in the game.
Chappell said that it was only the West Indian side on the 1980s that could go in with an all-pace attack – it was difficult to imagine the Aussies play without a spinner at Gabba.
Nathan Hauritz has been going through some rough form and his tour of India was abysmal. Yet, it looks like he will take the appointed place in the side.
