Thorvaldsens Museum: The Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen lived for more than 40 years in Rome and was one of the most renowned artists among his contemporaries in Europe. In 1838, he donated his large collection to his native city Copenhagen. The conspicuous and colourful museum building was erected from 1839-1848 by the Danish architect M.G. Bindesboll and is one of the finest building. In Denmark‘s oldest museum you will primarily see the sculptures that Bartel Thorvaldsen made. But in addition to Thorvaldsen’s own works, the museum also contains his extensive collection of paintings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and his collection of antique object of art.

The museum has very interesting architecture. On the roof the goddess of victory, Victoria, drives her four-in-hand and expresses the fame, which Thorvaldsen achieved in both his time and today. Inside the Museum the colours are equally strong both on the lavishly decorated ceilings, in the patterns of the floors and in the colours of the walls. And the light is fantastic in the Museum when it falls through the windows set high up and gives shape and shadow to the sculptures and reliefs.

Private guided tours for groups can be booked in English, German, French and Danish. The guided tours can be planned during the Museum’s normal opening hours as well as outside these, with an added museum guard fee. From DKK 675 not including entrance fee, one  guided tour takes about 50 minutes and maximum 25 people per guided tour. Larger groups are divided into smaller groups with individual guides. The museum also offer tours that end with a glass of wine and a snack in the Museum’s beautiful entrance hall. The participants can then take advantage of the presence of the guides and ask them questions in the informal setting.
